The Orientation for the 2025 Fall of the Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) Master’s Program was held on August 28 at the Research and Innovation Incubation Center. President Tsai-Yen Li personally attended and encouraged new students to take full advantage of GCIT’s international academic resources and opportunities for cross-cultural exchange, reminding them to cherish the program’s environment: “Make every day a good day for studying.”

Video greetings were also shared by Dean Wen-Ling Tu of the International College of Innovation, Mei-Ling Hsu, Distinguished Professor of the College of Communication, Hu Yuan-Huei, Chairman of Taiwan Broadcasting System, Carlson Huang, Manager of RTI’s International Language Division, as well as partners from TaiwanPlus and Radio Taiwan International.

As Taiwan’s first English-Mediated Instruction (EMI) program in international communication, GCIT has made steady progress since its founding three and a half years ago, deepening both international exchanges and industry collaborations. This year, GCIT admitted 24 new students, including six international students from Mexico, South Korea, Turkey, Myanmar, and Vietnam, further enhancing the program’s diverse international profile.

Trisha Tsui-Chuan Lin, Distinguished Professor and Director of GCIT, invited President Li to deliver remarks and also introduced the program’s three major academic tracks: International Journalism, Digital Creative Content Production, and AI Marketing Technology & Innovation. She highlighted GCIT’s close academic ties with institutions in the United States, Australia, and Singapore, noting that the semester began with a visit from the Director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute. GCIT has also strengthened collaboration with the tech and media industries, publishing Taiwan’s first AI MarTech White Paper with the AMT Association in late August.

President Li emphasized that GCIT is one of NCCU’s finest English-taught programs, integrating resources from five colleges and offering students abundant opportunities in international exchange, cross-sector collaboration, and domestic and overseas internships. He noted that these resources are designed to prepare students with practical skills for future careers in international communication.

As part of the orientation, Director Lin led President Li on a tour of GCIT’s advanced New media studio, which allows students to experience immersive media production and hybrid reality applications. Featuring cutting-edge equipment, the studio underscores GCIT’s balance of theory and practice, providing students a platform for experimentation, innovation, and career preparation in communication and media.

New faculty members also introduced their courses. Newly appointed Assistant Professor Tim Chang presented his course Digital Imaging and Media Practice, while Assistant Professor Christine Cook personally welcomed students and outlined her class. Professor Tammy Lin and Assistant Professor Kuei-Hsi Tsai also interacted with the new cohort, introducing their courses. In addition, Assistant Professor Hou Tsung-Yu from the College of Communication’s Digital Content Program launched his new GCIT course Topics in Human-Robot and AI Interaction.

The orientation featured alumni and senior student reflections. Nora Mankel, a recent GCIT graduate from Germany, encouraged students to plan their thesis work early and find supportive advisors, sharing how her Capstone project led to a presentation at an international conference. Hoang Long Truong from the Czech Republic spoke about GCIT’s abundant resources and internship opportunities, urging students to be proactive and ask questions to make the most of their studies.

Incoming student Lin expressed that her interest in new technologies and human-computer interaction motivated her to join GCIT, hoping to broaden her horizons beyond her undergraduate discipline. Marco Uriel Moctezuma Mendoza, a lawyer from Mexico, also shared his enthusiasm for developing professional skills and Mandarin proficiency in Taiwan.

The orientation concluded with support and encouragement from faculty, alumni, and industry partners, symbolizing the start of a dynamic and diverse academic journey for GCIT’s newest cohort. With abundant resources and strong mentorship, the students are ready to embark on a promising new chapter.
