The Master’s Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) at National Chengchi University (NCCU) showcased its unique interdisciplinary and professional program and research capabilities at the 75th Annual Conference of the International Communication Association (ICA), held in June 2025 in Denver, USA. As the world’s largest and most prestigious communication conference, ICA attracted over 4,000 leading scholars from across the globe. GCIT’s presence at this event significantly elevated Taiwan’s visibility in the field of global communication and innovation education.
As Taiwan’s first interdisciplinary EMI(English as a Medium of Instruction)Master’s program in global communication—emphasizing international collaboration and industry engagement—GCIT introduced its distinctive approach at the International Chinese Communication Association (ICCA) reception, a key affiliated event at ICA. Distinguished Professor Trisha Lin, GCIT Director and ICCA Vice President, presented the program’s pioneering features and highlighted its cutting-edge achievements in Virtual Production and GenAI Avatar applications.
GCIT’s cross-college curriculum, which integrates theoretical grounding with hands-on innovation, drew strong interest and praise from global scholars attending the ICCA reception. This marked the first time a Taiwanese communication graduate program was formally featured at such a high-profile international academic platform. GCIT’s robust international partnerships, industry networks, and advanced applications of XR and generative AI technologies further captured widespread attention.
Additionally, GCIT faculty and students also made strong academic contributions at ICA. Professor Lin, in her role as ICCA Vice President, chaired and organized the highly competitive ICCA-ICA research panel, presenting her National Science and Technology Council-funded study on deepfake threats and user efficacy. She also actively participated in the editorial meetings of two critical journals: Human Communication Research (SSCI-indexed, ICA journal) and Communication and Society Journal (TSSCI-indexed). Assistant Professor Christine Cook, who serves as International Liaison for ICA’s Communication & Technology Division, presented research on emerging technologies. Additionally, GCIT student Honoka Fukuda, under Cook’s supervision, received a Top Paper Award from the Health Communication Division—an impressive recognition for communication research training in a relatively young program.
Through its impactful participation at the 2025 ICA Annual Conference, GCIT not only showcased the innovation and professionalism of Taiwan’s communication education but also laid a strong foundation for future international academic and industry collaborations.
