With the pandemic subsiding and borders reopening, students are again eager for overseas learning and career development. To help students achieve their aspirations and gain exposure to the global stage, the Master's Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) invited one of its professional advisors, Director Tony Liao from the Central News Agency's (CNA’s) International and Cross-Strait News Center, to share his experience exploring international careers.

As a journalist, Liao spent most of his career in Hong Kong before moving to the United States. "I'm always ready to go somewhere because that's my job," he said, adding that being ready to move is part of the nature of journalism. Working abroad has also strengthened his abilities, such as intensive reading and writing English articles in the United States. It immensely helped him in his later work at the CNA, including reading, editing translations, and selecting news.

Liao also introduced his educational background to GCIT students. He is an alumnus of the College of Communication at NCCU. Many of his former professors, such as Chen Wen-Ling from Advertising and Lu Fei-I from Radio and Television, still teach at the university. Studying at the College of Communication helped him better understand himself and his life goals. He encouraged the students not to be limited by their majors but to find their interests and develop in that direction.

Regarding advice for younger students, Liao suggested that language skills and international networking are essential. During the Q & A session, a student asked how to write a good resume when applying for a job. He provided the insights he gained from reviewing many resumes to help students write their resumes when job hunting. Liao pointed out that applicants should first understand the position they are applying for and demonstrate their strengths and abilities that match it.

Regarding the news industry, Liao said that the news media would stay, and information gatekeepers are still necessary for the public. He mentioned that the best journalists in the international news industry usually work in Beijing because working there requires overcoming many challenges in obtaining information. At the same time, Liao encouraged students to be always prepared and sensitive to various societal challenges, as opportunities can come anytime. He also reminded students not to worry excessively or feel pressured or uncertain as long as they keep moving forward.

GCIT's dual-advisor system offers a professional advising event to connect students with the industry and guide them in career planning. As part of this system, each GCIT student is assigned an academic advisor and professional team advisors from the program's industry partners. This year, CNA's professional advising team will be joined by experts from Google, Public Television Service, TaiwanPlus, and TVBS International News. Through various activities, including lectures, media visits, exchanges, and career counseling, these professionals will provide practical learning support to students during the 2023 Spring semester.
