On February 13, 2023, the very first day of the Spring semester of 2023, the Master's Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) held an orientation to welcome its newest batch of students who joined the GCIT in the new semester. GCIT Director, staff, and senior students from the 2022 Spring and Fall batches attended the event to help the new students familiarize themselves with school life within NCCU.

The event kicked off with opening remarks by GCIT Director Mei-Ling Hsu, who gave an overview of the curriculum, internship, and overseas learning opportunities to which students could look forward. As a relatively young program started last year, Director Hsu indicated that the GCIT continually seeks to forge more student partnerships and learning opportunities, such as through industry visits, expert-taught courses, field trips, guest lectures, and the in-house virtual reality media studio. She encouraged students to make the best out of the opportunities provided as they embark on their new academic life at NCCU.

As part of the event, senior students from the 2022 Spring and Fall batches - Jerry Lee (Taiwan), Jee Mananya (Thailand), Billy Cheuk (Hong Kong), Cindy Lin (Taiwan), and See Kai (Singapore) participated in a session, sharing essential survival tips, their experiences related to academics, course selection, internship, and overseas learning, as well as the wide range of activities that the students could participate in to enrich their school life with broader horizons.

Jee Mananya (GCIT Spring 2022), who will be interning at Mekong Institute in Khon Kaen this semester, shared, "I appreciate the hands-on experience provided by GCIT in new technology, including virtual reality, 3D design, and digital media. As GCIT offers a wide range of opportunities for students ranging from in-class learning to internships, I encourage students to plan ahead of time to maximize their learning and overall experience in Taiwan.”

Billy Cheuk (GCIT Fall 2022) also noted, "The GCIT offers tremendous opportunities for students to gain insights from industry leaders and enhance their global exposure through different seminars and workshops. I encourage our new students to keep an open mind which will help them to transition well into the GCIT program."

New student Sang Hoang Le (GCIT Spring 2023), from Vietnam, who had previously worked in the education and tourism sectors, mentioned, “I am delighted to be warmly welcomed by the GCIT family. I found the teachers and GCIT students to be friendly and dynamic. I appreciate the advice provided by the senior students in helping the new students adjust to the new environment. From now on, I hope to pick up valuable knowledge and make the best out of the opportunities provided by NCCU and GCIT."

Joyce Wang (GCIT Spring 2023), from Taiwan, who had previously studied literature, also indicated, "I found the sharing by the seniors to be informative and helpful to new students. My goal is to become a professional content creator in the future, and I hope to explore the developments in the new media industry during my time at GCIT.”

The event ended with a get-together dinner involving all participating students to welcome them to GCIT. During the dinner, the students mingled with each other and interacted with the seniors in a more cozy setting.

Established in February 2022, the GCIT is Taiwan's first international and interdisciplinary graduate program to cultivate comprehensive communication talents in new media. The program admits students both in Spring and Fall. Among them, as least two-thirds are awarded either full or half scholarships in their first year. Into its third batch of students, the GCIT family comprises 52 local and international students from 13 countries and regions, including Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Admission for the Fall Semester is now open. If you are keen to join the GCIT or learn more about the exciting opportunities offered by the program, we invite you to visit the GCIT website (http://gcit.nccu.edu.tw).
