Established in 1970, the Department of Mathematics is a leader in the research and instruction of pure mathematics and mathematical science. Department faculty have established strong ties to the Colleges of Law and Commerce to cultivate research and applied talent in operations research, computer science, actuarial studies, and mathematical economics. In addition, the Department is collaborating with the Department of Finance to jointly develop programs in Mathematical Finance and Financial Engineering to promote mathematical excellence in the fields of finance and banking.
