Doctor’s Program in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language

Founded in 2008, the Doctoral Program in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) covers four domains, namely, Chinese, foreign languages, education, and international academic collaborations. The TCSL program focuses on the training of promising teachers, scholars, and leaders in the domain of Chinese learning. The core curriculum includes three tracks: Chinese linguistics, TCSL pedagogy and Chinese society and culture. Mastery of a second language is a graduation requirement and all students are served by NCCU’s College of Foreign Languages and its Foreign Language Center, providing comprehensive instruction in 24 foreign language studies, allowing the program to accommodate students from a wide range of backgrounds and widely varied professional and research goals. The TCSL program actively collaborates with institutions around the world to promote excellence in TCSL research and instruction, and to provide employment and collaboration opportunities for program members. The program has established NCCU as an important global incubator for TCSL teachers as well as an innovative research center.
