NCCU Overseas Offices Triple Enrollment Numbers Despite Pandemic Pressures

Date : 2021-05-21 Department : Office of International Cooperation (OIC)
• NCCU’s Thailand recruitment office tripled enrollment numbers to over 100.
• Indonesia office doubles enrollments to 87.

NCCU’s two overseas offices in Thailand and Indonesia are experiencing record enrollment numbers despite the coronavirus pandemic. Established in December 2019, the Thai office has since tripled enrollments, breaking the record of 100 students for the first time. The Indonesian office has been similarly successful, doubling enrollments on the previous year to 87.

These increases in student numbers follow a year-on-year trend that displays strong and stable growth in Thai and Indonesian student numbers.
Due to pandemic restrictions, the Thai office has largely used social media for promotion and outreach and has also provided a dedicated Line consulting service.
Distinguished Professor May-Shine Lin (林美香), the Vice President for International Cooperation at NCCU, credits the diligent efforts of the overseas offices staff members with the record-smashing number of enrollment against the devastating Covid-19 pandemic.

“Despite the pandemic, our staff in these countries were able to operate effectively. Our Thailand representatives were still able to attend expos and while the Indonesian representatives were not able to formally establish an office (due to the pandemic), we still have people working from home in the area. This all helps to expand our visibility and reputation in Indonesia.”
Professor Lin also noted the success of NCCU’s many Chinese language learning programs. The Mandarin teaching programs at NCCU have weathered the pandemic storm with both expertise and reputation.

“Thanks to Taiwan’s effective control of the pandemic, many universities that we previously did not have connections with have now reached out. We have just signed partnership contracts with University College London as well as the University of Edinburgh. Currently, we are in negotiations with other high-ranking universities across the globe.”
Professor Lin also noted that students from 17 European countries are offered scholarships by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), totalling 83 places all together.

“Because of the growing importance of the Chinese language, there are now many European nationals who want to study at NCCU, and are taking advantage of the opportunities provided by Taiwan funded scholarships and language learning options.”
The NCCU Office of International Cooperation (OIC) has established an unprecedented “Virtual Exchange Program” in response to the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the road last semester. From the initial 3 students that attended NCCU classes via the brand new Virtual Exchange Program last semester, the number of students enrolling in the online distance teaching has now grown to as many as 70 this semester thanks to official promotion for the event.

Through these virtual exchange students, the Office of International Cooperation can arrange study partners, namely “Buddy Program,” and establish groups for academic assistance, shared interests, and friendly chat. It is hoped that this virtual learning experience can ignite international students’ passions for Taiwanese culture in lieu of coming to the country physically.
