The first lecture of the NCCU Lo Chia-lun(羅家倫) International Sinology Chair, initiated by NCCU President Ming-Cheng Kuo(郭明政), is scheduled to take place in October, 2019.

Jui-Sung Yang(楊瑞松), office director of the Sinology chair, said that the chair’s Emeritus Professor Ying-Shih Yu(余英時)will address to the audience via video recording. The first Chair Professor David Der-Wei Wang (王德威)will give a speech titled“Intellectuals in times of Crisis.”

According to Yang, the uniqueness of the Sinology chair lies in the fact that topics addressed will not be limited to literatures. Rather, the chair will cover extensively topics regarding history, philosophy, arts and culture in the Chinese-speaking world.

In addition to academicians of Academia Sinica, the chair plans to invite overseas prestigious scholars to Taiwan to serve as chair professors in the future. According to the chair’ establishment guidelines, the NCCU will offer US$50,000 a year for each chair professor for academic researches.

The NCCU Lo Chia-lun International Sinology Chair was founded on May 20, 2019, at the university’s anniversary celebration ceremony in an attempt to commemorate former Minister of Education Lo Chia-lun and to forge the NCCU into becoming a center for Sinology in the world.

Yu, an academician of the Academia Sinica, has completed nearly 60 books and more than 400 papers, was recommended as the Chair’s first Emeritus Professor, while Wang, also an academician of the Sinica, was proposed as Chair Professor in the
committee on July 5th this year.

NCCU President Kuo thanked everyone for their supports. Kuo also expressed his gratitude towards Lo Chia-lun's two daughters for their donations which made the Sinology chair come true.
