Natalie Lin (Yu-Chun Lin), a graduate of the Master’s Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) at National Chengchi University (NCCU), traveled to Hawaii, USA, from January 6 to 9, 2026, to participate in The 59th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS).

At the conference, she presented her research on digital narrative and video games, demonstrating the international competitiveness of Taiwanese academic scholarship. HICSS is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading interdisciplinary academic conferences.Held annually in Hawaii, it brings together scholars from Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on system sciences, information technology, organizational studies, and social issues. In recent years, the conference has continued to expand into the humanities and social sciences. Its structure of multiple tracks and mini-tracks provides a platform for in-depth academic dialogue and exchange.

Lin presented her paper, “Digital Narrative in Puzzle Video Games: How Narrative Affects Players’ Motivation, Enjoyment and Emotional Demand,” as the first author in the “Games and gaming” mini track under the “Digital and Social Media” track. The paper was co-authored with Assistant Professor Christine Cook from the GCIT program.

The study explores how digital narrative influences players’ motivation, enjoyment, and emotional needs within puzzle video games. In addition to her paper presentation, Lin participated in a workshop themed “IT, Business, and Society.” Through the design of escape rooms and virtual-reality-based gamified learning experiences, the workshop examined how immersive interactive mechanisms can be applied to enhance the ability to identify misinformation, deepening participants’ understanding of emerging trends in digital literacy education tools.

Lin noted that the mini-track structure of HICSS enables researchers to engage in focused discussions on specific topics, fostering constructive academic feedback and international scholarly exchange. Her participation highlights the research strengths of GCIT students in areas such as digital narrative, game studies, and cross-cultural communication, reflecting the program’s educational goals of cultivating global perspectives and interdisciplinary integrative thinking.
