Date : 2026-01-12 Department : Master’s Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology

【Article by GCIT】

The Master’s Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) at National Chengchi University (NCCU) conducted an overseas course titled “Cross-Cultural Media and Innovation Technology: Immersive Learning (Tokyo)” from January 5 to 12, 2026. Led by Director of GCIT, Distinguished Professor Trisha Lin, the delegation traveled to Tokyo, Japan, for academic exchanges and industry visits, strengthening students’ practical competencies in international communication and technology applications through hands-on learning.

The eight-day program adopted a triadic pedagogy—classroom learning × field observation × reflective practice. Site visits spanned Japan’s public media, commercial broadcasters, and leading universities, including NHK Technologies Inc., the NHK Broadcasting Museum, Fuji Television, The University of Tokyo, and International Christian University (ICU)—showcasing GCIT’s highly internationalized and interdisciplinary curriculum design.

Inside Public Media: Crisis Response and Advanced Technologies

On the industry front, GCIT was invited by NHK Technologies Inc. and warmly received by Executive Director Kentaro Higashijima, becoming the first Taiwanese student delegation to officially visit the organization. Students gained first-hand insights into Japan’s public media disaster-response mechanisms and cutting-edge applications such as 8K ultra-high-definition imaging and virtual reality.

Notably, during the visit, earthquakes occurred in parts of Japan, prompting NHK to immediately activate its disaster news protocols. The original studio tour was adjusted to prioritize real-time disaster coverage, offering students a rare opportunity to observe how public media fulfills its social responsibility during emergencies. The itinerary also included the NHK Broadcasting Museum, where students traced nearly a century of public broadcasting development in Japan.

Academic Dialogue on AI Governance and DEI

Academically, GCIT faculty and students attended special lectures at The University of Tokyo, featuring Vice President Professor Yujin Yaguchi, Associate Professor Ai Hisano, and Professor Hideaki Shiroyama. Discussions addressed internationalization in higher education, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), immersive media aesthetics, and technology governance in AI-driven medical applications. Students also toured the UTokyo campus and museum complex to observe knowledge transfer practices at a research-intensive university.

The delegation further visited International Christian University (ICU), where they were personally received by Vice President for International Academic Exchange Mark Williams, reflecting the strong mutual commitment to international academic collaboration. A featured lecture by Associate Professor Yu-Kei Tse focused on Japan’s contemporary television media ecology and media consumption trends, deepening students’ understanding of Japan’s media landscape and cross-cultural communication issues.

Cultural Exploration and Technological Experiences

The program included a cultural study visit to Meiji Jingu during Japan’s New Year Hatsumōde, enabling students to observe the interaction between religious traditions and modern society. Students also visited a teamLab digital art exhibition, exploring the integration of technology, aesthetics, and narrative through immersive interactive installations—bridging classroom theory with industry practice. Director of GCIT, Distinguished Professor Trisha Lin, noted that the Tokyo immersive learning course concretely realizes the program’s educational goals of internationalization, practice-oriented learning, and interdisciplinary integration. GCIT will continue to expand its global partnerships to cultivate communication professionals with global perspectives and strong technological literacy.
