Perched on the scenic, up-hilled campus of National Chengchi University (NCCU), the Chinese Language Center (CLC) offers intensive Mandarin courses throughout the year, with terms in spring, summer, fall, and winter. Held Monday through Friday, these courses are designed to help international students from all over the world rapidly improve their Mandarin listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Depending on their individual goals, students can choose to study from as little as three months to as long as one to two years. CLC’ reputation for high-quality teaching, as endorsed by former students, has made CLC a top choice for international learners of Mandarin. Many students aim to further their education in Taiwan, and by studying at CLC, they gain both language proficiency and valuable insights into their intended academic departments.
As the semester begins at NCCU, amidst the excitement of course selection and student club fairs, CLC Director Dr. Estelle Jiang, who also teaches in the English Department, has launched a “Language & Cultural Exchange Program.” This initiative fosters interaction between NCCU’s local students and international students, promoting both language and cultural exchange. With strong support from Dr. Yo-Ning Cheng from the Master’s & Doctoral Program in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, Dr. Hyun Ju Lee from the Korean Language & Culture Department, and Dr. Saengchan Pranee from the Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures Department, the program has successfully matched 43 local and international students as language partners.
The language partners began connecting in late September, and CLC students have expressed excitement and anticipation about meeting their Taiwanese counterparts. Some partners hit it off right away, even planning weekend outings together, while others, particularly those new to Mandarin, are using this opportunity to review their class materials with the help of their language partners. Taiwanese students, in turn, are applying what they’ve learned in class, enhancing their teaching skills through these real-world exchanges. Additionally, students studying Korean and Thai are taking advantage of the program to further develop their target languages through mutual language exchange.
Since last summer, the CLC has relocated the "Language Exchange Board" to a high-traffic area on the first-floor hallway, providing a platform for both local and international students to engage and find language exchange partners. NCCU students are encouraged to create their own eye-catching language exchange posters, while CLC students regularly gather at the board after class to seek out new partners.
Through initiatives like the Language & Cultural Exchange Program, CLC aims to build bridges between international and local students, fostering deeper cross-cultural friendships through meaningful language and cultural interactions.
