The Master’s Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) at National Chengchi University continues to advance research and development in global communication, innovation technology, digital governance, and interdisciplinary studies. In June 2026, GCIT Director Professor Tammy Lin, Professor Christine Cook, and GCIT student Yang Ming traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, to attend the 76th Annual Conference of the International Communication Association (ICA 2026), where they presented multiple research outcomes. Their participation demonstrated GCIT’s growing research strength in XR, AI, human-computer interaction, and intercultural communication.

Professor Tammy Lin had five research papers included in the ICA 2026 program. The topics covered XR entertainment experiences, cognitive and physical demands in VR gaming, cross-cultural privacy management in social virtual reality (SVR), social presence and self-enhancement in multi-user VR experiences, and the impact of asymmetric virtual reality interaction on interpersonal impression formation. These research directions align closely with GCIT’s long-term focus on new media technologies, AI and human-computer interaction, digital society, and intercultural communication.

In addition, GCIT student Ming Yang presented her capstone-based research, “How Native Speakers Perceive Non-Native English Speakers’ Writing with GenAI Assistance,” in collaboration with her supervisor, Professor Christine Cook. The study examines how native English speakers perceive GenAI-assisted writing by non-native English speakers, focusing on perceptions of effort, first impressions, and potential racial bias. This work highlights GCIT students’ participation in international academic research and reflects the program’s strengths in generative AI, global communication, and intercultural communication.

During the conference, Professor Lin also visited the University of Cape Town and met with Professor Jonathan Shock from the Department of Mathematics. They exchanged views on AI governance, technology policy, data center development, and potential interdisciplinary research collaboration. On behalf of GCIT, Professor Lin also presented a commemorative gift, laying the foundation for future academic exchange and cooperation.

Since its establishment, GCIT has focused on global communication, innovation technology, digital governance, and interdisciplinary practice as its core areas of development. The participation of Professor Tammy Lin and Professor Christine Cook in ICA 2026 not only strengthened NCCU’s international visibility in communication technology, XR, and human-computer interaction, but also demonstrated GCIT’s achievements in promoting internationalization and interdisciplinary research. Moving forward, GCIT will continue to expand its global academic network and cultivate a new generation of communication professionals with both international perspectives and technological literacy.
