NCCU EMI Workshop: Navigating the 'Red Lines' of AI Academic Writing Tools with Gina Jin
【Article by EMI Resource Center】
The NCCU EMI Resource Center hosted the “Academic Writing Tools Workshop” on November 11, 2025, led by writing consultant and PhD candidate Gina Jin. This intensive workshop equipped NCCU students and faculty with practical, AI-driven English learning tools, while critically addressing the essential boundaries of academic integrity.
The session covered four practical AI writing tools: Writefull, Rubriq, Linggle Write, and Linggle Read. However, the primary focus was not just on functionality, but on ethical application. Gina opened the workshop by addressing the NCCU code of conduct regarding language-enhancement tools. She clarified that making grammar, style, and concision edits is permitted, provided the tool names are disclosed in acknowledgments or methodology. Conversely, actions such as uploading a blank prompt to generate a literature review, recycling AI-produced sentences as "original" insights, or failing to cite AI assistance are prohibited as academic misconduct.
During the deep-dive into the tools, Writefull was highlighted for its specialized academic features. Beyond standard checks like paragraph review, synonyms in context, paraphrasing, and generating titles/abstracts, Writefull offers Academizer, which transforms colloquialisms into academic vocabulary. A significant point of comparison with general AI models (like ChatGPT) was Writefull's commitment to data privacy: its users' data will be kept confidential permanently, unlike platforms where data might be collected for training purposes. Furthermore, Writefull is used by top academic publishers and copyeditors.
The workshop adopted a highly practical, "learn by doing" approach. Participants practiced using Rubriq for revising and enhancing fluency. Linggle Write was demonstrated as a powerful tool that provides not only grammar checks but also a quantified essay score and detailed writing feedback covering vocabulary, grammar, content, and organization. Linggle Read enables users to check common word combinations and offers integrated dictionary and Wikipedia searches.
By integrating a crucial discussion on academic ethics with hands-on practice, the workshop successfully equipped NCCU faculty and students with both the efficient AI writing tools and the core principles necessary to maintain integrity in their scholarly work.
