Discovering the Sights and Flavors of Taiwan

NCCU is located in Taipei, one of Asia’s most culturally diverse cities. People can have the full “Taiwan experience” by traveling and eating in Taiwan. The food in Taiwan runs the gamut from inexpensive but flavorful street food in night markets to the traditional Chinese food served in high-end restaurants. In between meals, you can soak in the cultural landscape from historical buildings to national parks.
The world has recently woken up to selected Taiwanese specialties such as bubble milk tea and shaved ice. But are international students in Taiwan open to the whole range of traditional Taiwanese foods? Stinky tofu is considered a delicacy for Taiwanese, but many international students cannot bear the smell of it. Laura Gauthier-Hinton, a Canadian exchange student, enjoys all the tofu dishes in Taiwan, including stinky tofu. Carlos Moline, a Spanish exchange student, turns up his nose at stinky tofu, but he still savors Taiwan-style honey-roasted pork. According to Carlos, Taiwanese cuisine is giving him a sweet tooth.
Taiwan is also renowned for its picturesque scenery. Natsumi Abe, an exchange student Discovering the Sights and Flavors of Taiwan By Celeste Tham（覃昭彤） from Japan, loves exploring Taiwan in her free time. She has been to Jiufen, Dadaocheng, and even Taichung. On the other hand, Laura is currently focusing her free time on exploring Taipei, but she has also been to Sun Moon Lake with the International Youth Group. Both are looking forward to discovering more places in Taiwan, and are interested in traveling to the southern part of Taiwan, specifically Tainan which has a reputation for delicious street food.
Nothing is more interesting than exploring Taiwan with your eyes and mouth. Although Taiwan is a small place, many things are waiting to be discovered. With an open mind, open eyes and an open mouth, you’re sure to have an unforgettable time in Taiwan and also make many new friends along the way.
