Graduates Encouraged to Be Leaders at 2019 Commencement Ceremony

NCCU Commencement Ceremony was held in the university gymnasium on June 15, the number of graduates this year reached nearly 2,000. Current Vice President of Taiwan, Mr. Chien-Jen Chen (陳建仁), the President of NCCU, Dr. Ming-Cheng Kuo (郭明政), and Emeritus Professor of NCCU, Dr. Fong-Mao Lee (李豐楙) all shared their personal experiences, providing advice to graduates in their insightful speeches.
Vice President Chen quoted comments made by Pope Francis that underscored his view of leadership: “A leader should be just like a shepherd, living with the smell of the sheep”, and should avoid becoming a politician who scrambles for power and money; He then encouraged graduates to become outstanding social leaders.
Professor Lee urged graduates to learn eagerly when faced with the unknown, “When the need comes to take another as your teacher, take it!” Do not neglect the value of a certain path, he said, even if it’s a path which very few people take.
“Commencement means the beginning of a new journey”, President Kuo stated. What awaits graduates next are the golden ten years of their lives. Education only occupies one-quarter of the whole knowledge journey; the other three-quarters comes from fellow students and people you come across from all walks of life, such as taxi drivers, food vendors, newspaper delivery man, and company managers.
President Kuo further encouraged graduates to become stronger when faced with challenges. He shared his own experience from 30 years ago, when he had just left home to study abroad and couldn’t wait to be independent. Only after he became a father, did he realize the longing parents have to stay in their children’s lives. With this, he expressed his sincere hope that graduates keep their homes and their starting point in mind wherever they may be.
