ICRT interviews President Chow and impressed by NCCU's internationalization

Stevie G, host of the Morning Show in International Community Radio Taipei (ICRT), interviewed President Edward Chow on May 15 and congratulated on NCCU’s 91st anniversary. He also expressed his appreciation for NCCU’s internationalized strategy and future outlook.
President Chow stated that NCCU is probably the most internationalized university in Taiwan. Of 16,000 students, about 3,000 are international students. NCCU is devoted to establish a globalized learning environment and offers 22 different language courses which are rarely taught in Taiwan, including Slavic, Arabic, Turkish, and so. Besides, NCCU regularly holds international events and promotion campaigns, among them, “World Festival,” starting in the afternoon, is to welcome staff, students, neighbors, and the community to warm up for NCCU’s 91st anniversary and enjoy its joyful atmosphere.
This year’s World Festival invited a total of 34 food stands offering exotic cuisine and delicacies by students from all over the world. The famous DJ Joseph Lin of ICRT also hosted a “DJ on campus” program, interacted directly with students on the spot, and did a “3-minute DJ live show” on air . Joseph found that since his last visit to NCCU in the 90th anniversary, NCCU had become more and more internationalized. Apart from the increase in proportion of the international students, he was also impressed by the proficiency, courage, and attitude of the non-English majors to express their thoughts in fluent English.
In the morning interview, President Chow stated that NCCU is determined to change the compartmentalized learning style in Taiwan and equip students with the ability to learn on their own to cope with the rapid transformation in the society and industries in the future. In order to do that, NCCU has launched the “Curriculum Restructuring Project” (課程精實方案) in 2016. To restructure the curriculum, NCCU has to make sure that the faculty have reasonable and balanced workload in terms of teaching services, research, and off-class activities. The Project is gradually adjusted and expected to loosen its criteria in 2018 to allow students to learn a skill or knowledge in different disciplines and study for a double-major or minor programs. Professors, on the other hand, are asked to offer more fundamental courses for all NCCU students and not only the students in particular programs or colleges.
