Russia’s Flagship University in Education Visits NCCU –Student and Faculty Exchange Program with MSPU Will Start Soon

September 20 marks the day of the prestigious visit of three high-ranking representatives of Moscow State Pedagogical University (MSPU) to NCCU. Upon invitation by the Taiwanese Ministry of Education (MOE), MSPU Rector Dr. Alexey Lubkov, Director of Foreign Languages Institute Mr. Sergey Zasorin, and the Deputy Head of MSPU’s International Relations Office Ms. Olga Morozova embarked on a weeklong journey to Taiwan from September 16 to September 22. Signifying an important endeavor for international cooperation in the sphere of education between both sides, the visit culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding as well as an Addendum to the MoU.
The Russian delegation’s first stop at NCCU led them to the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature. MSPU Rector Dr. Lubkov was invited to deliver a public speech on Russia’s education system. While Dr. Lubkov particularly illustrated the current situation at MSPU, it shall be noted that the entire speech was being conducted in Russian language. Thus, affording a unique opportunity for attending students from the Slavic Language Department to put their language skills to the test.
Succeeding Dr. Lubkov’s address, professors and students enthusiastically engaged in interesting discussions during the Q&A session. Questions raised by the audience included, whether or not students should continue pursuing advanced studies following the attainment of an undergraduate degree, and whether Dr. Lubkov supports the idea of unified history textbooks in schools nation-wide. In response to the latter, MSPU’s Rector highlighted that people will always apply different perspectives on history. Nevertheless, as an educator, he firmly believes in the paramount importance of having to deliver a consistent and homogeneous understanding of one’s home country to its youth. Hence, he therefore advocates for the utilization of unified textbooks.
The visiting delegation also availed themselves of the opportunity to visit NCCU’s Russian Center, founded in 2014 by the Russian World Foundation (Russkiy Mir Foundation) and being the first of its kind in Taiwan. Afterwards, the group went to see NCCU’s affiliated institutions, including not only NCCU’s affiliated high school, but also an experimental elementary school and kindergarten.
After the Russian delegation’s familiarization with NCCU’s campus, the signing ceremony was initiated. NCCU’s Vice President Prof. Shu-Heng Chen and MSPU Rector Dr. Alexey Lubkov jointly signed the Memorandum of Understanding and the Addendum to the MoU. Thus, officially launching the exchange program for students and faculty members between both universities. In honor of this occasion, Dr. Lubkov highlighted that Moscow State Pedagogical University has actually recently hired an NCCU alumni as one of the university’s full-time professors, while MSPU students have been coming to NCCU to learn Chinese for quite a considerable amount of time. Thus, considering this already existing foundation of collaboration, the two universities have now entered a new chapter of academic exchange by signing this important official agreement.
