NCCU’s 2018 Study Abroad Fair Attracts A Large Audience of Local Students and Stirs Up Curiosity over Student Exchange Opportunities

NCCU’s annual Study Abroad Fair has just come to an end, having provided four days full of information, experience sharing, and resources for everyone interested in going on an exchange abroad. The fair, organized by the Office of International Cooperation (OIC), took place from October 22 to October 25 and aimed at exciting curiosity and provoking interest in an education overseas. Under the motto of expanding NCCU students’ horizon, Si Wei Hall - which served as the venue of the opening day event - was flooded with inquisitive and enthusiastic students on Monday afternoon. A total of 52 booths of NCCU’s partner universities offered visitors the opportunity to interact and consult with the student representatives of the various schools. In that way, attendees were able to receive first-hand information on topics such as student life, academic aspects, and cultural elements.
NCCU Vice President Prof. Shu-Heng Chen delivered his introductory remarks during the opening ceremony of the 2018 Study Abroad Fair. Noticeably pleased with the enormous response of volunteers willing to represent their respective home universities at the fair, Vice President Chen expressed his sincere gratitude to those over 70 foreign exchange and language school students for their efforts. While the range of universities present at the event was remarkably wide, universities from Asia (25 partners) and Europe (21 partners) embodied the overall majority.
Thereafter, students such as Siloè Bernier (Lumière University Lyon 2, France) and Agunbiade Oluwafisayomi (University of Burgundy, France), assisted curious NCCU students with their questions about an exchange semester in France. In fact, all 52 booths were staffed with one or more international or overseas Chinese student, who all actively and wholeheartedly promoted their home institutions.
German exchange student Gina Wiedemann, majoring in International Relations and History, was in charge of the booth from the University of Erfurt. The university is well-known for its faculty of Education, Catholic Theology, and Governance, and can claim Martin Luther - a key figure in the Protestant Reformation - to its alumni. As Gina represents the first German student from the University of Erfurt having come to NCCU within the last 5 years, she highly appreciates this opportunity to increase the visibility of her home institution at NCCU and vice versa. That is, so that the exchange between both schools can expand. As long queues had formed in front of her booth with students inquiring about dormitory facilities, the required German language proficiency, and the programs available at the University of Erfurt, it appears that she has definitely accomplished her goal.
Accompanied by the supply of exotic drinks as a refreshment for the fair visitors, attendees were very well entertained and hosted. Among others, volunteers offered Sharbat, a popular drink made from fruits and flower petals and often consumed by Muslims following their daily fast during the month of Ramadan.
This year’s fair was also joined by Prof. Mei-Fen Chen (Vice President for International Cooperation) and Mr. Liu Shih-Hung (Deputy Director of Taiwan’s ICDF Technical Cooperation Department), who both enjoyed the sight of the madding crowd. Over the course of four days, visitors could not only explore the exhibition booths of NCCU partner universities, but the opening event was also followed by an exchange experience sharing session on Tuesday (October 23). Subsequently, the third day of the fair informed attendees on scholarship opportunities, while available options for short-term summer programs were presented on the last event day, respectively.
Overall, the constant growth of NCCU’s exchange program system could clearly be felt and is also reflected in the numbers of incoming and outgoing exchange students. According to the most updated numbers, around 748 students from 43 different nations had selected NCCU as their exchange destination last year. Conversely, 704 NCCU students had hurled themselves into the adventure of a semester or year abroad in 47 different nations. These numbers are quite impressive, even more so, when compared to the initiation of the exchange program in the year 2003, during which merely a hundred local students pursued an exchange overseas. Throughout the years; however, the Office of International Cooperation has diligently worked on expanding and enhancing the study abroad opportunities in quantity and quality. Ultimately having resulted in a large cooperation network of over 460 distinguished partner universities from 68 countries worldwide.
