【Abstract】
As part of Taiwan's Bilingual 2030 and BEST initiatives, universities, faculty and teaching staff across the country are preparing to transition to English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI) across all academic disciplines. In this session we will discuss the central theories and learning models that underpin EMI in the Higher Education (HE) sector in Taiwan. We will critically assess four key ideas in EMI and explore what it means to teach in an EMI environment, while identifying practical strategies to support students and enhance teaching effectiveness.

Speaker: Jye Smallwood
Current position: English Language Fellow
Jye Smallwood is currently an English Language Fellow in Taiwan, affiliated with National Chengchi University through a collaboration between the U.S. Department of State’s English Language Fellow Program and the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). He holds a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching from the University of Oxford and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. His expertise focuses on learning outcomes and assessment methods in EMI contexts.
