Lecture Introduction:

As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies rapidly integrate into our daily lives and critical urban systems, understanding public perception has become essential for its successful deployment. In this keynote talk, Prof Shirley Ho will discuss the evolving landscape of AI-powered applications with a focus on the role of communication. She will discuss why public perception plays a crucial role in AI adoption and success across different contexts, what trust in AI means to different stakeholders, what factors influence trust in AI systems, and practical strategies for building public trust. A key aspect she will focus on is explainability—how making AI systems more transparent can bridge the gap between complex algorithms and public understanding.
