In an era of rapid transformation in the field of communication, international collaboration has become a key driver of educational innovation. On December 9, 2024, the Master’s program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) at National Chengchi University warmly welcomed a delegation of five professors from the University of South Carolina’s College of Information and Communications (USC). The delegation, led by USC Dean Dr. Tom Reichert, included Associate Dean Dr. Kim M. Thompson, Associate Dean Dr. Linwan Wu, Associate Professor Dr. Feili Tu-Keefner, and Senior Lecturer Scott Farrand. Their visit aimed to deepen academic exchange, expand industry partnerships, and explore innovative future collaborations.

Bridging Academia and Practice: Unlocking Collaborative Potential

During their visit, the USC delegation engaged in in-depth discussions with GCIT faculty and students under the guidance of GCIT Director Prof. Trisha Lin. Two student representatives shared their unique academic journeys and achievements. Billy Wu reflected on how GCIT’s curriculum provided him with a solid foundation in media practices, enabling him to showcase Taiwan’s cultural narratives through international internships. Meanwhile, an international student from Europe, Karolina, recounted her transformative cross-cultural learning experience and emphasized how GCIT helped broaden her professional expertise and global outlook. Dr. Tom Reichert praised GCIT’s industry-oriented approach and global connections, remarking: “GCIT’s investment in practical applications and student resources is truly impressive. We look forward to fostering closer collaborations in educational innovation.” He also highlighted the importance of equipping students with AI and data application skills while instilling a strong sense of responsibility and ethics in a technology-driven era.

Strengthening Ties: Advancing Collaborative Projects

The two institutions delved into potential collaborative initiatives during bilateral meetings. GCIT students may be able to participate in USC’s upcoming eight-week summer online program in 2025, focusing on cutting-edge communication technologies. In return, USC students are expected to visit GCIT in 2025 to explore Taiwan’s dynamic new media industry. Both sides also discussed the feasibility of a dual-degree program, aiming to leverage their respective curricular strengths to provide enriched academic resources. Additionally, USC professors were interested in serving as visiting scholars at GCIT to share their educational experiences and professional insights.

Merging Technology and Education: Forging an Innovative Future

The visit strengthened academic ties and laid the groundwork for new international collaborations. The USC delegation was particularly impressed by GCIT’s virtual production studio and its students’ creative applications of generative AI and virtual production techniques. Dr. Feili Tu-Keefner remarked: “GCIT’s training truly embodies the spirit of ‘The sky is the limit.’ We look forward to more sparks of innovation in future academic and industry collaborations.” Looking ahead, GCIT will continue to advance international cooperation and technological integration, fostering a learning environment centered on innovation. The program aims to cultivate communication professionals capable of navigating global changes, enhance cross-border exchanges between Taiwan and the U.S. in communication fields, and elevate Taiwan’s impact on international communication education.
