Students from the Master's Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) at National Chengchi University had the privilege of an exclusive visit to Bloomberg, a global leader in business and financial information. This enriching experience offered students a deep dive into the principles of international financial journalism, Bloomberg's data-driven systems, cutting-edge AI technologies, and invaluable career insights shared by industry professionals.
The session featured presentations by Miaojung Lin, Taipei Bureau Chief; Adrian Kennedy, Senior Editor; and Betty Hou, Reporter. Together, they provided a comprehensive overview of Bloomberg's operations, AI-powered tools, and practical career advice for aspiring professionals in financial news media.
Inside Bloomberg: A Transparent and Collaborative Environment
Miaojung Lin gave students insights into the operations of Bloomberg's Taipei office, Taiwan's largest foreign media hub, which employs 30 to 35 people across journalism, IT, and sales. The office's open layout emphasizes Bloomberg's commitment to transparency and collaboration, featuring glass-walled meeting rooms that promote inclusivity. Students discovered that Bloomberg's 159 global offices each have unique characteristics, such as fish tanks—Taipei's tank contains 40 fish—symbolizing the company's distinctive identity and interconnectedness.
The Role of AI and Data in Financial Journalism
Adrian Kennedy, a seasoned editor with 25 years of experience, discussed Bloomberg's innovative use of AI and data analytics in news production. He introduced the "Trend" system, which tracks audience interests, monitors market sentiment, and supports editorial decisions through real-time data analysis. Adrian also showcased Bloomberg's AI tools, which summarize articles to help readers save time while upholding high journalistic standards.
"Bloomberg's AI systems are designed to enhance, not replace, human journalism," Adrian explained. "We leverage AI to gather and process data efficiently, but the critical aspects—context, analysis, and storytelling—remain driven by humans."
Miaojung Lin provided additional insights into AI-assisted storytelling, reaffirming Bloomberg's commitment to transparency by marking AI-generated content with a yellow banner. She emphasized the enduring importance of human journalists: "AI can handle the basics—who, what, when, and where—but it cannot explain the 'why' and 'how,' which are the hallmarks of great journalism."
Inspiring Career Journeys and Advice for Aspiring Journalists
Betty Hou shared her journey from a highly competitive 10-week internship at Bloomberg to securing a full-time reporting position. With a background in healthcare management and journalism, she faced initial challenges in finance reporting but overcame them through dedication and the support of mentors. Betty encouraged students to adopt a proactive mindset:
"If you wait for assignments, you'll miss opportunities. Show passion eagerness to learn, and don't fear making mistakes. Your attitude matters more than technical expertise when starting."
Miaojung Lin added to Betty's advice by emphasizing the importance of staying informed and being prepared to discuss the latest financial news. She recommended developing "hard knowledge," such as understanding financial statements while demonstrating curiosity and a willingness to learn.
Adrian reinforced these points by highlighting the significance of trustworthiness when handling sensitive information and the need for cultural awareness and global perspectives. He encouraged students to engage with diverse topics through books, podcasts, and international experiences, particularly concerning cross-strait relations and global markets.
Bloomberg's Vision and GCIT's Mission
The visit highlighted Bloomberg's dedication to using data and technology to provide reliable and unbiased journalism while nurturing the next generation of professionals. For students in the GCIT program, this experience aligned well with their focus on integrating communication and innovation within a global context.
Through this visit, GCIT students received an insider's perspective on Bloomberg's innovative operations and gained invaluable guidance on succeeding in the fast-paced world of financial journalism.
