2024 Fall GCIT Orientation warmly welcome new students

Master’s Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) at National Chengchi University (NCCU) organized an orientation event for the Fall 2024 cohort on September 5, 2024. The event featured a dynamic lineup, including welcome remarks from the NCCU and GCIT leadership, information sessions about the GCIT curriculum and its features, and sharings by senior GCIT students. This semester, GCIT welcomes 20 new students from diverse backgrounds, including marketing, communication, journalism, information management, foreign languages, and bioindustry communication.
During the opening segment, GCIT invited President Tsai-yen Li, GCIT Advisory Committee member and Vice Chancellor of the University System of Taiwan Professor Herng Su, and Dean of NCCU’s International College of Innovation (ICI) Distinguished Professor Wen-ling Tu to offer their welcome messages. In a specially-recorded video, President Li highlighted GCIT's unique features, including the dual mentorship, domestic and international internship support, and an interdisciplinary curriculum. He encouraged students to leverage these opportunities to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact on the world. Professor Su emphasized NCCU’s academic strengths and open learning environment, urging students to engage actively and immerse themselves both within and beyond the university. Echoing these sentiments, Professor Tu, who joined via video call from abroad, highlighted the international diversity of ICI and encouraged students to build strong connections with their peers, both locally and internationally.
As Taiwan’s first interdisciplinary EMI graduate program in global communication, new media, and technological innovation, GCIT has made significant strides and continues to grow. GCIT Director Trisha Lin highlighted the program’s achievements and encouraged new students to build on the achievements of their seniors to reach even greater heights. She also shared ongoing discussions relating to international teaching collaborations with scholars and practitioners from other top universities in Australia, Singapore, and the United States, which students can look forward to. Lin urged the new students to do their best as they embark on their journey at NCCU.
To assist new students in their academic planning, the orientation also organised information sessions covering GCIT’s course offerings, local internships, and overseas learning requirements. These were presented by GCIT Director Trisha Lin, Director of the International Master’s Program in International Communication Studies Tammy Lin, and GCIT Assistant Professor Chrissy Cook. New student Tsong-yin Li (Taiwan), who majored in information communication previously, noted that these information sessions provided new students with a better understanding of the curriculum and available resources. Through the GCIT, she looks forward to deepening her knowledge and skills in the fields of innovative technology, AI, and big data analysis.
The new students also appreciated the student sharing session featuring senior students, including Jerry Lee (Taiwan) and a panel comprising Henry Nguyen (Vietnam), Zona Tseng (Taiwan), Lada Vasylenko (Ukraine), See Kai (Singapore), and Samuel Phong (Vietnam). New student Jie Min Tan (Malaysia), who previously majored in bioindustry communication and development, found the senior students to be dynamic and friendly. He valued their advice on time management and course planning, and hoped to apply the knowledge gained from GCIT’s courses on a meaningful topic for his capstone project in the future.
