The 2024 academic year has begun, and NCCU warmly welcomes nearly 400 international freshmen from around the world! Starting from September 2, the Office of International Cooperation (OIC) has planned a series of activities to help international students integrate into campus life, including one-stop registration, a Dadaocheng tour, an IKEA shopping trip, and a dormitory move-in ceremony. Today's (5th) orientation session is the highlight of the opening activities, divided into morning and afternoon sessions at the Law School Auditorium and the Business School's Yushan Hall.
"Campus is not big enough for your life. Explore Taipei and everywhere else when you are in Taiwan." Prof. Katherine Chen, the Vice President of the Office of the International Cooperation(OIC)shared her personal study abroad experiences, encouraging new students to explore the unknown and try courses outside their usual fields to broaden their perspectives. She reminded international students to focus on three pillars to support their overseas study: building friendships, seeking trustworthy mentors, and finding motivation to overcome adversity. Associate Vice President of the OIC office, Prof. Elain Lin emphasized that NCCU is not only a leader in humanities and social sciences but is also advancing in AI and semiconductor programs, preparing students for the rapidly changing future with interdisciplinary skills.
Christinne Jean Louis from Haiti, after completing her bachelor's degree in business administration at NCCU, decided to continue her studies with a master's degree at NCCU. She shared that NCCU provided a strong academic foundation, and Taiwan's safe, friendly, and inclusive environment encouraged her to stay. Austrian student Quentin Radlwimmer, pursuing the master degree at international relationsInternational Master's Program in International Studies, NCCU, shared his story at the ceremony: after visiting several universities, he was drawn to NCCU, highly praised on Wikipedia as Taiwan's top social science institution.
The orientation session is the first stop for international students to learn about life in Taiwan. The OIC provided briefings on health insurance, residence permits, and invited experts from the university's counseling center, Professor Mei-Chuan Wei, and foreign police officers from Taipei's Wenshan First Precinct to share information on gender equality, mental health care, and fraud prevention. The International Association (IA), NCCU Student Union, and NCCU International Cafe also organized activities to encourage participation. SLAM (Study Less, Achieve More) President Shin Jong-Seong from South Korea shared how SLAM serves as a bridge for international students to integrate into local life through language exchange and cultural activities, helping international students quickly adapt to life in Taiwan while promoting cultural understanding among local students.
"Even with 97 years of history, NCCU continues to value innovation, freedom, and diversity," said NCCU President Tsai-Yen Li, encouraging international students to take this opportunity to learn Mandarin and immerse themselves in Taiwanese culture. NCCU is committed to providing comprehensive support, demonstrating its determination to offer an internationalized educational environment.
