Have you ever imagined that Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest artists in history, would stand in front of you and share his story with you? With the current technological advancements, this is no longer a surreal fantasy. On February 20th, 2023, the Master's Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) arranged a field trip to AMBI SPACE ONE in Taipei 101 for the exhibition "The Man Behind the Myth – Leonardo Da Vinci Taipei." More than 30 faculty, staff, and students joined the bilingual guided tours. They were immersed in the artistic journey to experience how the exhibition uses the latest technology.
Collaboratively curated by MAJOR SEVEN, WA Co Ltd. and Contemporanea Progetti, renowned professional art exhibition and production teams, as well as the curating company from Australia, Taiwan, and Italy respectively, the exhibition features Leonardo da Vinci, the well-known Italian artist, inventor, scientist, and polymath in the 15th to 16th century. Leonardo is also widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures of the Renaissance, with his artwork, invention, and wide-ranging contributions to fields such as anatomy, geology, physics, and engineering.
After touring Milan and Vancouver, Taipei is proud to be selected as the first stop in the Asia tour of "The Man Behind the Myth – Leonardo Da Vinci." The exhibition comprises six main sections, namely "The Genius and The Renaissance," "Leonardo Introduces Himself," "Leonardo and His Life," "The Last Supper," "Room of Mirrors," as well as "Inside the Mind." Other than Leonardo's life stories, renowned masterpieces, such as "Mona Lisa," "The Last Supper," and "The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne," are also displayed and introduced. The artistic journey continues with the highlight of the exhibition – a 38-minute of the immersive light show which takes place in the 393-square-meter exhibition room. The room has 40 4K+2K high-spec projectors and audio sets of 15 full-range speakers with four subwoofers, creating an immersive art show with classical musical accompaniment.
GCIT students were particularly intrigued by the section "Leonardo Introduces Himself." The organizers virtually brought Leonardo Da Vinci back to life. He wears a 15th-century European red robe and interacts with the audience to introduce himself in a video. By applying the current digital technology, exhibition design and visitor experience can be more interactive and immersive. It facilitates the delivery of a message or information. Raymond Low (GCIT Year 2 student from Malaysia) believes combining arts and technology allows the audience to see a new interpretation of the artwork, history, and culture. "It was a significant exhibition tour! I was exposed to and fully submerged in the amazing fusion of art and modern technology with an unexpected perspective on technology." Sang Hoang Le (GCIT Year 1 student from Vietnam) added.
The field trip allows students to learn about the great polymath in history and encourage them to engage with art and public education in new and innovative ways, using audio-visual installations and interactive displays to explore the deeper meaning behind each art piece. Prof. Mei-Ling Hsu, Director of GCIT, also shared, "It is a great opportunity to bring students to visit AMBI SPACE ONE at the beginning of the new semester. This unique experience of arts and high-tech allows students to see the application and implementation of what they learned from class. We'd also like to explore future opportunities in which GCIT and AMBI SPACE ONE can partner for students' career development." To echo the interdisciplinary learning spirit of the program, the GCIT office has been arranging field trips and study visits for students, such as iOCEAN in Keelung, "VR ZONE New Taipei" in Hong-Hui Plaza, etc. The two GCIT required courses "New Media, Technology and Society" and "Between Tradition & modernity: Cases of Taiwan and Asia" also aim to introduce novel technologies in mass media, new media, the metaverse, VR/AR interactions, and further translate their skills and creativity into practical solutions to bring goods to the society and different fields.
