ICI invited Prof. Carew to give a Talk on US-China Strategic Technology Rivalry and Taiwan’s Role

The International College of Innovation (ICI) hosted a talk on the strategic technology rivalry between the United States and China, and Taiwan's role in the conflict on December 14th, 2023. The talk, held at the university's Research and Innovation Incubation Centre, was led by visiting scholar of ICI and visiting lecturer of global commerce at the University of Virginia, McIntire School of Commerce, Professor Rick Carew. Professor Carew is an expert on Asian financial markets with a decade of experience in Hong Kong and China, and has also worked as an Asian finance editor for the Wall Street Journal.
During the talk, Professor Carew covered a range of topics related to the tech rivalry between the US and China, including TSMC, Foxconn, intellectual property theft, and the tech divide between the two countries. He discussed the history of semiconductors and how Taiwan, China, and the US are working on their own versions of the technology, with an eye towards creating "silicone shields" for each country. Professor Carew also addressed the current state of bilateral relations between the US and China and what the future may hold for these two countries in terms of technology and competition.
