NCCU President Kuo Leads Students in Experiencing Different Cultures in Overseas Study Week

This year’s Study Abroad Fair kicked off October 15 th at NCCU’s Siwei Hall. With over 50 schools from 16 countries in attendance, local and foreign students took advantage of the opportunity to meet with school representatives and learn about study abroad opportunities. President Kuo noted, “You need to expand your horizons beyond Taiwan to the entire world.This is where you learn to grow.” He also expressed appreciation for the foreign and international students in attendance as presenting an excellent example to follow for those interested in studying abroad. Experiencing different cultures first-hand will enrich your life and increase your knowledge, he said.

Zhang Jialing from Shanghai University talked about her school’s excellence in sociology-related majors, and her experience hosting the China Social Sciences Annual Conference.She eagerly and enthusiastically answered questions from NCCU students, and providedadvice and tips for other students.

Michael Mullaney is an exchange student from Georgetown University in the United States,who has studied Chinese for many years and is currently visiting Taiwan for the second time.In fluent Chinese, he said that Georgetown is best known for its department of political science, and he is pursuing a degree in political science with a specialization in East Asian studies. He noted that Georgetown students emphasize the importance of internships alongside academic performance, with more than 60% of undergraduates spending some time abroad to develop foreign language skills that will help their future careers. “This is why I came to Taiwan,” he said. “I know our government needs people who can speak Chinese.”
