About his talk:
The 1920s was a golden age for Egyptian theatre. As troupes competed for audiences a flurry of new plays and translations were performed in Cairo, Alexandria and around the country. They drew on a variety of influences from French , to stories from the Arabian nights and other kinds of performance tradition which had long existed in Egypt. This talk looks at the development of the theatrical scene in post revolution Egypt and the sources that it was based on, including some from the classical Arabic tradition.

About him:  
Raphael Cormack has a PhD in Egyptian theatre from the University of Edinburgh. He has edited two books of translations from Arabic to English: The Book of Khartoum (with Max Shmookler) and The Book of Cairo. His first book Midnight in Cairo: The Divas of Egypt's Roaring '20s is out now in North America and is released in Egypt and the UK in May.
