Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer led a delegation to meet with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on the morning of September 17 to discuss cooperation between Taiwan and Michigan in trade, technology, talent development, and industrial investment. That evening, Governor Whitmer met with Taiwan-based alumni of Michigan State University (MSU) and the University of Michigan. Professor Tammy Jih-Hsuan Lin, Director of the Master’s Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT) at National Chengchi University (NCCU), attended the event as both an MSU alumna and GCIT Director, exchanging views on artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, and global talent development.
 

During the event, Governor Whitmer participated in a panel discussion with University of Michigan alumni from academia and industry. She outlined Michigan’s strategic priorities in AI, technology infrastructure, and the innovation economy, while exchanging views on future opportunities for collaboration between Taiwan and Michigan. The governor also held a small-group exchange with three Michigan State University alumni: GCIT Director Tammy Jih-Hsuan Lin, James Wu, currently spokesperson for Foxconn, and Yen-Ping Tsai, a chief operating officer in the high-tech industry.
 

Michigan has long-standing strengths in the automotive and advanced manufacturing sectors, which complement Taiwan’s capabilities in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing. Director Lin said, “This exchange deepened my appreciation of Taiwan’s vital role in the global AI and technology value chain. Technological advancement involves more than industrial development and hardware infrastructure; it also requires cross-cultural communication, global narratives, and international talent. This further underscores the importance of integrating global communication with innovative technology.”
 

GCIT is committed to cultivating interdisciplinary professionals equipped with global perspectives, digital communication capabilities, and technological literacy. Participation in this international alumni and industry exchange highlighted the program’s connections with global higher education and industry networks while opening new possibilities for Taiwan–U.S. academic exchange, talent development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
