Event Highlight — April 24, 2025 | EMI Resource Center, National Chengchi University
On April 24, 2025, the “EMI Resource Center Writing Tools Workshop” organized by the EMI Resource Center at National Chengchi University concluded successfully. It draws enthusiastic participation from both faculty members and students. Centered on hands-on practice and interactive engagement, the workshop was led by one of our English writing consultants Yu-Che Yen, with assistance from fellow writing consultants Gina Jin and Martin Ng. Together, they guided participants through an in-depth exploration of various academic writing tools.
During the workshop, Yu-Che Yen introduced four advanced academic English writing tools: Writefull, Rubriq, Linggle Write, and Linggle Read. These tools integrate artificial intelligence and corpus-based technologies to assist academic writers in enhancing the naturalness and accuracy of their English expression, improving the structural coherence and fluency of their papers as well as strengthening their mastery of collocations and academic phrases. Through hands-on activities, participants experienced firsthand how AI-powered writing tools can support and streamline the academic writing process, ultimately improving both writing efficiency and output quality.
The session began with an introduction to Writefull, a platform specifically designed for academic English writing. Writefull offers features such as paragraph restructuring, synonym suggestions, sentence rephrasing, and automatic title and abstract generation, significantly enhancing the precision and scholarly quality of writing. Participants registered and operated the platform using laptops and tablets to gain firsthand experience with the immediate support AI can provide throughout the writing process.
Following this, Rubriq was introduced. Known for its sophisticated language diagnostics and structural optimization capabilities, Rubriq assists writers in revising their drafts through a user-friendly interface that tracks changes in Word documents. This tool enables participants to not only identify grammatical errors but also to improve their vocabulary usage and structural organization in academic writing.
A highlight of the workshop was the demonstration of two corpus-based tools: Linggle Write and Linggle Read. During the hands-on session, participants input specific keywords and phrases to search for collocations and syntactic patterns across different textual domains. This allows them to explore subtle differences between general English usage and domain-specific language. Linggle Write combines AI scoring with revision suggestions, which aims to help users refine their vocabulary, grammar, and overall structure step by step. Meanwhile, Linggle Read draws from extensive real-world corpora to enhance participants’ academic language sense and mastery of natural English usage. By applying corpus knowledge to search for frequency patterns, syntactic structures, and collocational variations, participants learned how to strategically adjust their language use based on writing purposes and disciplinary conventions, thereby significantly improving the quality and professionalism of their academic writing.
The workshop placed a strong emphasis on experiential learning. Through direct operation of each tool, participants engaged in paragraph rewriting, grammar correction, writing evaluation, and vocabulary application exercises, gaining a comprehensive understanding of each tool’s practical value. The lively atmosphere encouraged active exchanges of insights among faculty and students, who discussed the comparative advantages and applications of the various tools and demonstrated a high level of engagement and collaborative spirit.
This workshop not only showcased the practical applications of AI-assisted writing tools but also inspired participants to approach academic writing with renewed innovation and confidence. Many attendees expressed their intention to apply what they learned to future English writing endeavors to enhance the quality and efficiency of their academic papers. The NCCU EMI Resource Center remains committed to promoting the development of academic English proficiency, and further supporting faculty and students in overcoming writing challenges, which strengthen NCCU’s competitiveness in the international academic community.
