On November 20th, 2024, Dr. Mike Yuchuan Shen, Assistant Professor at the Center of Teacher Education and the Institute of Professional Development for Educators, National Chung Hsing University, delivered an engaging lecture at National Chengchi University (NCCU). Centered on the theme “Think Globally, Act Locally: Multicultural and International Education”, the session captivated attendees with a blend of academic insights, practical experiences, and interactive discussions.

A Journey Through Global Perspectives

Dr. Shen structured the lecture around his own academic and cultural journey, spanning from Japan, Finland, to the United States. Through the lens of personal anecdotes and professional experiences, he emphasized the importance of intercultural competence and media literacy in today's interconnected world. Attendees were transported to vibrant Tokyo classrooms, serene Finnish landscapes, and bustling streets of New York City as Dr. Shen recounted his experiences teaching, studying, and exploring in these regions.

Highlighting key lessons learned, Dr. Shen spoke about Shokunin spirits (mastery of one’s profession) from Japan, Finland's inclusive educational practices, and the value of community-building in the United States. He encouraged participants to reflect on their own cultural encounters, emphasizing that global perspectives begin with local action.

Dynamic Discussions: A Hallmark of the Lecture

Dr. Shen employed an interactive technique dubbed as "Think-Pair-Share," fostering vibrant group discussions among students. One particularly thought-provoking activity challenged attendees to answer the question about their greatest achievement or experience they have so far, which is NOT on their resume, in hope that they would value their own experience of international education in an alternative manner. This prompted participants to think beyond conventional metrics of success and education by means of their personal narratives.

These discussions revealed a tapestry of experiences and values, from small acts of kindness to transformative moments of cultural exchange. Dr. Shen skillfully wove these reflections into his broader message, showing how multicultural and international education can enrich professional and academic aspirations.

Bridging Education and Global Goals

Dr. Shen also explored the intersection of education with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) through higher education. He illustrated how integrating SDGs into academic strategies can foster a sense of responsibility and collaboration among students and educators alike.

Using tools like the Frayer Model and Padlet, he introduced practical methods to link global goals with classroom teaching. Dr. Shen’s emphasis on building partnerships resonated with NCCU students, many of whom express interests in engaging with international education projects.

Reflections and Takeaways

The lecture concluded with an open Q&A session, during which attendees explored topics ranging from bilingual education in Taiwan to strategies for developing media literacy. Dr. Shen left the audience with an inspiring quote: “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Students praised Dr. Shen’s ability to connect complex theories with relatable experiences. “This session has deepened my understanding of how education can bridge cultures and advance global objectives,” said one participant.
