In a remarkable journey that began as one of the top 6 semifinalists at the Hult Prize Taipei Summit in June 2023 , the student team FABRECO has emerged victorious as one of the top three champions in the prestigious Dragons' Chamber competition held on December 2, 2023.
The Dragons' Chamber, an annual pitch event for immigrant entrepreneurs in Taiwan, serves as a bridge connecting small business owners and entrepreneurs with industry leaders seeking innovative business ideas. Originating in 2016, the event was founded by experienced foreign entrepreneurs residing in Taiwan, aiming to address the challenges of starting a business and securing necessary resources.
The culmination of FABRECO's success occurred during the Meet Taipei Festival 2023, the largest startup festival in Asia, where a diverse array of entrepreneurial resources and networks converged. FABRECO utilized this platform to showcase their products, engaging with national and international investors, buyers, technology partners, and visitors over three days from November 30th to December 2nd.
FABRECO, dedicated to addressing the textile waste problem, presented three groundbreaking products:
• Luxury Fabresheets: A circular solution for five-star hotels, transforming old luxury Egyptian cotton into new ones through mechanical recycling.
• Biodegradable Hospital Bed Sheets:Crafted from luxury pineapple or bamboo fibers, this product not only addresses the textile waste issue but also prevents bed sores for bedridden patients.
• Hospital Fabrebeds:Utilizing polyester extraction technology, FABRECO transforms textile waste into hospital bed frames. The prototype of this model was sponsored by OIE NCCU College of Commerce and designed by the 2023 sustainable award-winning Dot Design.
Prior to the competition, FABRECO had the opportunity to share their business model with the public through an interview with Mr. Andrew Klerck from TIE Taipei Impact Entrepreneurs.
During the Meet Taipei Festival, Angelica Urbina 吳愛寧, a PhD candidate specializing in Sustainable Development, pitched FABRECO's initiatives on both the Global Stage and the Echo Stage, which hosted the Dragons' Chamber Competition.
Expressing her joy at the results, Urbina acknowledged the tremendous support from NCCU University, professors, mentors, and the OIE office's female leadership role models, including Mrs.Hsin-Lu Chang and Tiana Wu. She expressed gratitude for their time, skills, and financial support in creating a hospital bed prototype. Special thanks were extended to her thesis advisor, Dr. Ching-Ping Tang 湯京平, for providing knowledge and skills related to sustainable development.
Urbina also thanked the Dragons' Chamber for the opportunity, acknowledging the outstanding prizes sponsored by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Taiwan, Enspyre, and Musa Trademark.
As one of the many entrepreneurial student teams at NCCU, FABRECO showcases the university's commitment to translating education into action. The NCCU family extends congratulations to FABRECO on this remarkable achievement and wishes them continued success!
