With the release of the 2021 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) Asia university rankings, National Chengchi University ranks first in Taiwan in terms of international exchange students, and 95th out of 634 institutions of higher education in Asia, thus maintaining its spot in the top 100 for five consecutive years, and making it one of the top 15% of all Asian universities.

Since 2009, QS has published annual Asian university rankings calculated using indicators including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, and the number of citations per faculty member. The rankings have not been without controversy. For example, the quantitative assessment approach highly emphasizes publishing of scholarly articles in English-language journals, thus favoring English-speaking countries which are home to the most prestigious journals, and also favoring a research focus on the natural sciences, engineering, and medicine. This puts scholars working in the humanities and social sciences at a relative disadvantage due to time-consuming and comprehensive nature of their work, and also works against scholars whose primary language is not English.

Despite the natural disadvantages NCCU suffers in the QS evaluation standards, the university has still performed exceptionally well. In the "2020 World University Rankings by Subject" released this past March, NCCU was recognized as leading in "Arts and Humanities " and "Social Sciences and Management", and was placed within the world top 150 universities in subject areas including "Politics and International studies", "Modern Languages", and "Communication and Media Studies", alongside Johns Hopkins University and Tufts University in the United States, the University of Hamburg in Germany, and the University of Birmingham in the UK. NCCU also ranked within the top 151-200 in accounting and finance, law, business and management studies, and linguistics, alongside top international schools such as Freie Universität Berlin and BI Norwegian Business School.

This international recognition of NCCU’s outstanding academic performance was instrumental in the recent establishment of exchange and collaboration agreements with University College London (UCL) in the United Kingdom. Starting next year, the two universities will commence one-year student exchanges, which will lead to expanded collaboration and curriculum sharing.

In the latest QS Asia University rankings, NCCU ranked first in Taiwan in terms of international exchange students, reflecting NCCU’s status as the preferred institution for students from around the world seeking to study in Taiwan, and indicating the success of the university’s long-term efforts to foster a global reach and internationalized outlook. Today, NCCU has exchange agreements with a total of 545 universities and institutions in 71 countries around the world, making it by far the leading exchange destination in Taiwan. In 2019, 657 NCCU students were studying at 267 top universities in 45 countries around the world. At the same time, NCCU played host to a total of 714 international students from 173 renowned universities in 35 countries.

Over the past few years, about 15% of the total student population at NCCU has consistently been made up of foreign students from more than 80 countries around the world. Distinguished Professor May-shine Lin, Vice President for International Cooperation, said that NCCU has never been subject to restrictions imposed by various ranking schemes, and remains thoroughly committed to continuously improving its teaching, research and service missions, and to cultivating outstanding talents. Recent years have seen significant innovations, such as Lo Chia-luen international sinology chair, the continued internationalization and multicultural development of the campus, and the integration of humanities and social sciences through digital technology, and the like. Future efforts will emphasize transnational, trans-university, and transdisciplinary learning, engagement in local practice and creative renovations, and the construction of a completely digital as well as borderless campus. All these will be done to ensure that all international students at Wenshan (Mont des lettres) can experience the local vitality firsthand and witness the extraordinary achievements of Taiwan in person, and that they will all benefit themselves from an opportune access to the best teaching and research training.
