On April 23, NCCU Chair Professor of the Lo Chia-Luen International Chinese Studies Lecture Series, Dr. David Der-Wei Wang, was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS). The AAAS was established in 1780 and is one of the oldest learned societies in the US. Each year it selects the most influential contemporary leaders in a variety of fields, including art, the humanities, and business. This year's election affirmed Dr. Wang's myriad achievements in the field of Chinese literature research.

Dr. Wang is the Edward C. Henderson Professor of Chinese Literature at Harvard University and an Academician at Academia Sinica. He previously delivered three lectures at the Shun-wen Auditorium on the topic “Intellectuals in Moments of Crisis: History, Thought, and Literature.” Prior to the lecture series, he held an initial introductory forum on the topic “The Politics of Time: An Experiment on Chinese Literary History at Harvard.” During the forum, Wang recounted the process of editing and producing the book A New Literary History of Modern China, with guests at the forum gaining a lot from his insights. In addition to the series of large-scale lectures, two small-sized forums were also held, affording NCCU teachers and students opportunities for closer interaction and exchange.

An additional three visiting professors have been invited to lecture as part of the Lo Chia-Luen International Chinese Studies Lecture Series, with lectures centered on the same core topic – “Intellectuals in Moments of Crisis: History, Thought, and Literature.” The exchange of ideas between Dr. Wang and other chair professors will be compiled and published as a book. In addition, the organizing body of the lecture series offers scholarships to postgraduate students wishing to conduct research or academic exchange at NCCU. It hopes that the lecture series may have a lasting effect on society, turning Taiwan into an academic beacon of light in the sphere of international Chinese Studies.
