In response to Taiwan’s low birth rates and the existing policy of National Chengchi University (NCCU) to increase international students, NCCU Vice President Wen-Chieh Wang (王文杰) headed a delegation to Malaysia from August 2nd to 9th in a bid to enhance the number of Malaysian students to Taiwan.

Wang said that the NCCU plans to set up a liaison office in Malaysia by the end of this year and that the office will be in charge of student enrollment, intercollegiate cooperation, and overseas internship. The office will also strengthen the NCCU’s services to Malaysian alumni.

The NCCU has been actively cooperating with many international universities in the face of global competition. So far, the NCCU has signed academic cooperation agreements with over 700 prestigious universities worldwide for research and student exchange purposes. In addition, the NCCU has provided short-term scholarships for studying abroad.

The announcement of the NCCU to set up a Malaysian office was aimed at rendering support to Taiwan government’s New Southbound Policy. The NCCU also hopes to set up business management and global governance programs with universities in Malaysia as soon as possible to strengthen the NCCU’s connections with local academic institutions and enterprises.

Led by Vice President Wang, the delegation included Vice President for Academic Affairs Tsung-Yu Lai(賴宗裕), Section Chief at the Office of Academic Affairs Shue-Show Sue(蘇淑秀), Officer Ching-Ching Chou(周菁菁), and Olly Chang(張心怡), a member at the International College of Innovation (ICI).

The group visited local high schools and promoted NCCU’s 2020 Overseas Chinese and foreign students’ admission. Chung Hua Middle School No.1, Batu Kawa Min Lit Secondary School, Serian Public Secondary School, Chung Hua Middle School No.4, Kian Kok Middle School, and Papar Middle School were among the visited ones.

ICI is the tenth college established by the NCCU and will enroll students in the fall semester of 2020. The college plans to offer courses that are multidiscipline and bilingual in Chinese and English. This July, the ICI launched the global governance summer school to build up international partnership. The NCCU wants to attract outstanding overseas Chinese to the university with its continuous effort to go global and to thrive all over the world.
