The Asian Congress for Media and Communication (ACMC) took place at National Chengchi University (NCCU) on Saturday, October 27th. It began with an introduction video of NCCU. The video included all different schools of the university and research centers, research programs, international exchange programs and so forth. After the video presentation, there was the flags entrance ceremony, as guests stood up in honor of the school anthem and the flags. After the opening ceremony, President Edward Chou gave a brief speech to welcome all participants from 22 countries, Dr. Chou also wished everyone a great stay during their three days in Taipei.

Chair of the board ACMC from Philippines, Dr. Rachael H. Khan, gave her opening remarks shortly after. She explained that a generation of new media is emerging, and with new opportunities, there are also new challenges. These new issues are in need for more discussions, and the conference provided a chance for media educators around the world to exchange their opinions and ideas on these topics.

After the initial greetings, two keynote speakers gave their respective remarks on their takes of media issues. Prof. Zaharom Nain, pointed out the unfair balance of power in a capitalized society, and how media could be easily manipulated. “Education of communication were funded by local universities, which strictly decided where their future students would go.” He called for the dismantling of current cultural structure, and review on some of the cultural rules putting into practice.

Afterwards, the second key note speaker Dr. Wei-Wen Chung talked about the future of artificial intelligence and technology education. He expressed his concerns on the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, describing it as “a survival crisis to the traditional communication industry”. “The crisis may make us irrelevant and marginalized, if we don’t change.” Last but not least, Prof. Chung proposed the concept of “three paradigm shifts”, which described the next evolution of the media industry and the solution responding to it.

The international conference of ACDC will be held from October 27th to 29th with many thoughtful discussion. All faculty and students are welcome to join.
