On May 12th, 2022, the International Master’s Program of Applied Economics and Social Development (IMES) of the College of Social Sciences (CSS) hosted a discussion on shared platform economies and smart cities. The program invited WeMo Scooter co-founder Jeffrey Wu and Happ. 小樹屋 co-founder Huang Yi-Ning to share their insight into the complexities and intricacies of building a successful shared platform business in Taiwan. The panelist shared their experiences journeying into the emerging market and some of the challenges they encountered when establishing their businesses.

WeMo Scooter is an e-scooter sharing platform which allows users to rent vehicles at accessible locations, allowing for an ease of convenience. Through a smartphone app, users can locate a nearby WeMo Scooter and utilize it for their transportation needs for a short rental fee. Wu discussed the importance of providing such a service in order to address issues related to environmentalism, urban development, and transportation accessibility. By utilizing data driven decision making, the hope is to be able make transportation more accessible to users while reducing the carbon footprint of vehicle emissions by relieving the need for personal vehicles.

Happ. 小樹屋 is a space sharing platform which allows users to book and rent workspaces for various work or leisure related activities. By providing accessible spaces and amenities at a low price, Happ. 小樹屋 targets an interesting demographic of users who are in need of convenient workplaces in an urban environment. Utilizing her background in design, Huang shared how crucial it is to prioritizing the user and facilitating a seamless booking experience.

Students inquired with questions about the difficulties utilizing a shared platform model for a business and the kinds of regulations or oppositions WeMo Scooter and Happ. 小樹屋 have encountered during their development and roll out. Additionally, how do these businesses strike the balance between corporate interests and their user’s feedback. Both platforms have plans for expansion and growth into international markets in the near future. Addressing the challenges that come with establishing themselves in new markets, Wu and Huang stated the importance of flexibility and adaptability. With WeMo Scooter, providing clear and concise information not just in Mandarin Chinese but also in English to allow for a more inclusive user experience; and with Happ. 小樹屋 adapting to the different needs and demands of different international markets when providing this type of service.
