Dozens of students from the International College of Innovation of National Chengchi University (NCCU) came out in solidarity with the international anti-war movement demanding an end to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine at the NCCU’s Student Association’s #StandWithUkraine #StopPutin rally held on March 3, 2022 held near the university’s General Building.

Donning placards declaring “I am an ICI Student and I Stand With Ukraine”, both local and international students from the college carried messages standing with love and peace, as well as declaring opposition to war(兼愛非攻,和平萬歲!). Professors from the social sciences and humanities disciplines gave short lectures concerning the ongoing geopolitical conflict, while students from various colleges including the College of Law, College of Ethnology, and the International College of Innovation as well as a Lithuanian representative from the newly-formed community organization “Stand With Ukraine - Taiwan” gave solidarity speeches affirming the student body’s stance against the Putin regime’s invasion of Ukraine.

“In line with our [college’s] motto of “innovation”, we believe that the first step towards creating a more harmonious and prosperous society is standing with truth and justice. Thus, we are here today to affirm our stance against useless violence, and demand our governments take action to end the suffering of our Ukrainian siblings,” Girard Mariano Lopez, a Filipino freshman who spoke on behalf of the attending ICI students, said in his solidarity speech.

Meanwhile, “Stand With Ukraine - Taiwan” representative Ričardas Sedinkinas expressed his gratitude for the students & faculty of NCCU who came out to show support for Ukraine and declare their support against the war.

The Student Association of NCCU, in a released statement, not only reaffirmed their anti-war stance, but also commended Ukranians who are defending their homeland. They call upon the government to provide Ukraine humanitarian assistance and protect those currently overseas here in Taiwan. Furthermore, they remind the student body not to listen to fake news about the Russo-Ukrainian war nor promote defeatism.

“Although it is difficult for us to provide concrete assistance to our distant friends, Taiwan, as a member of the democratic front, has the obligation to raise its fervent opposition against Russian aggression and to work in solidarity with other democratic countries around the world to uphold our dear democratic values,” the statement read.
