The first Griffins Cup Invitational attracts thousands to watch games amid typhoon

The first Griffins Cup Invitational (GCI) was held at the Gymnasium of National Chengchi University (NCCU) from August 6th to 10th, 2019. NCCU Griffins, the organizer, invited the teams from Tsinghua University in Beijing, University of Tsukuba in Japan, and Hanyang University in South Korea, along with Taiwan’s National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) and National Taiwan University of Arts (NTUA) for the basketball skills competition.

The visiting team Tsinghua University won the championship of the basketball tournament with a total five wins. NTNU was the runnerup, claiming 4 wins. The home team NCCU Griffins won the third place with 3 wins. NCCU President Ming-
Cheng Kuo(郭明政)awarded trophies to the winning teams and said: "NCCU has changed a lot, becoming more energetic than ever since the founding of NCCU Griffins two years ago.”

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the first Griffins Cup was awarded to Mao-Zhou Zeng(曾茂洲)of Tsinghua University. The Top Five Players were Kai-Jie Hong(洪楷傑)and Zhen-Ya Zhang(張鎮衙)of NCCU Griffins, Kuei-Yu Chou(周桂羽)of NTNU, Lan-Qin Wang(王嵐嶔)of Tsinghua University, and Inoue Soichiro(井上宗一郎)of University of Tsukuba, Japan.

The All-Star Game was held on the closing ceremony. The GCI team played against a team of Jordan Brand Invitational (JBI). The GCI team players included Hao Tian( 田浩)and He-Yu Jian(簡賀宇)of NCCU Griffins, Chia-Wei Chien(簡家暐)and Yung-Chuan Tung(董永全)of NTNU, Ri-Teng Zhou(周日騰)and Kuang-Chien Chiang(姜廣謙)of NTUA, Yamaguchi Hayato(山口颯斗) and Inoue Soichiro(井上宗一郎)of University of Tsukuba, Sang Kwon Park(朴相權)of Hanyang University in South Korea, and Dong Liu(劉東)and Mao-Zhou Zeng(曾茂洲)of Tsinghua University. After the fierce competition, JBI beat GCI 79-101.

Despite the powerful typhoon Lekima, the five-day event attracted over a thousand roaring and cheering
fans to watch the games. Edward Chow (周行一), president of the NCCU Griffins, concluded the games by giving remarks. He expressed his gratitude and told the crowds “hoping to see you next summer!"
