The vote result for naming the mascot of NCCU Men’s Division I basketball varsity comes out today. “雄鷹”, meaning the eagle, wins over 54% of the votes and therefore becomes the Chinese name of the Griffins.
Over 1,500 people have voted online, showing strong participation. “雷電", meaning thunders and lightning, gains around 32% of the votes and 12% for “國王", meaning the king, stated Sun Bing-hong (孫秉宏), executive director of the new varsity.
The mascot, a Griffin-like creature in the color of blue, white and red, represents the sporting spirit of NCCU. According to the PE Office, the design concept originates from ancient Greek legends, in which depict “Griffins” as a combination of lion and eagle, showing power and boldness.
The NCCU Men’s Division I basketball varsity will be formed in September, 2017. Wang Cing-cong (王清欉), director at the PE Office, says that he hopes the establishment of the varsity will “open the new era for NCCU in regards of sports development.” (quote translated)
