2017 NCCU campus marathon began on the 3rd, December. Nearly 2,000 contestants, displaying great sportsmanship, were fearless to the rain. This year, there were 49 runners awarded the top seven honors in different age groups. Some runners aspired to participate , some challenged themselves, and some even got good grades as the new participants.
President Edward Chou (周行一) considered that NCCU is the only university surrounded by mountains and rivers in the city. He hoped the runners could enjoy the race and beautiful scenery in the cool day. However, since the weather was not in the best condition and sprinkling, President Chou also reminded all the participants to be aware of the wet slippery ground.
The female racing was divided into three age groups, in which Hsu Yin-yin (許茵茵) (under 30 years old), Tsao Wen-xin (曹文馨) (aged 31 to 45) and Hong Bi-mei (洪碧梅) (46 to 60 years old) won the championship respectively. Hsu is a senior from Public Administration Department, participating in the campus marathon in NCCU for the fourth time. Constantly joining the competition and achieving good grades in pasts three years, she finally won the champion this year. Hsu said she ran very hard. This is her last year in NCCU, and she would like to keep the first place in NCCU.
The male racing was divided into four groups and the first place went to Chen Pin-ren (陳品任) (under 30 years old), Hong Hui-heng (洪暉恒) (aged 31 to 45), Ishihara Takaharu (石原忠浩) (aged 46 to60) and Tsai Huan-min (蔡煥忟) (aged 46 to 60). Chen and Hong both won the championship in their first participation. Chen, whose father is a NCCU alumni, is a 14 years old track and field team runner. He has professional training and practices as usual. This time he joined the campus marathon with his family. Chen said he has kept exercising habits, but he never thought of winning any place. Thus, he was really surprised by getting the championship.
Among all the runners, there was a pregnant woman participating in the race with her husband. She said though she is pregnant, she still needs to exercise for the the benefit of her health. Also, she could have the chance to go out with her husband by participating in the competition. Her husband, who carried a chair in the whole race for his wife to rest, romanticized the campus marathon.
Jonathan Spangler, the U.S. Ph.D. candidate in Asia-Pacific studies in NCCU, participated in the campus marathon for the fifth time. He often runs with his dog Mesa and this time is without exception.
Exchange students couple from Liechtenstein University, Artur Maibach and Nicola Betzler, also finished 4.6km race. It was their first time running on the mountain of NCCU. Both of them enjoyed the scenery along the race. In addition, Nicola was actually glad about the light rain for it cooled down her body temperature.
