The Commencement Ceremony of year 2017-2018 was held on June 9. Dr. Dah-Hsien William Seetoo (司徒達賢), the Strategy Maestro, loved and praised by NCCU students, alumni, and faculty, was invited to give the commencement speech in the afternoon session. Professor Seetoo would soon be retired. He humorously told the graduates that he was deeply honored to graduate with them and encouraged the graduates to wholeheartedly learn from one self and from others.
“I was determined to get into NCCU’s Business Administration at the age of 16,” the audiences cheered when Professor Seetoo described his personal history with NCCU. Professor Seetoo has taught in NCCU for 42 years, had served his term as NCCU’s Vice President, and was given the first “ZhongNi Teaching Excellence Award” (仲尼傑出教學獎), even President Edward Chow was one of his students. Dr. Seetoo shared 3 main thoughts with the audience as they would get into the job market soon: to learn from our mistakes, to learn from others, and "to listen, to speak, to read, and to think."
To make a decision on the job, one should ponder wholeheartedly and repeatedly, and keep the habit to self-evaluate for the betterment and continue to self-educate. On the other hand, one should also observe other people’s strengths and learn from them. “Listen, speak, read, and think” promoted by Prof. Seetoo for many years were his core principals in teaching case studies. He stated that the most important task of the educational institution is to help students develop the ability to learn after graduation; therefore, he focuses specially on case studies of specific topics or articles and trains students to grasp the ability to listen, speak, read, and think. Listening is crucial to hear, understand, and find out potential problems. Speaking is a mean to train clear and systematic ways to express explicit ideas. Reading is to absorb knowledge, gather relevant information, and practice thoughts and minds. Last but not the least, thinking is most needed for people nowadays and is what listening, speaking, and reading can really lean onto.
