NCCU 90th Anniversary Ceremony President Edward Chow: focusing on abilities in morality, intellects, physical, society and education

Nearly a thousand alumni returned to school and joined the NCCU 90th anniversary celebration ceremony on May 20. The school’s distinguished alumni, professors, administration staff and academic researchers were all awarded in the event.
President Edward Chow (周行一) stated that the goal of NCCU is to pursue excellence in every aspect.The school would need to recruit the best teachers and provide the most complete education for students. Additionally, NCCU will also focus on cultivating students’ abilities in morality, intellects, physical, society and education. Chow emphasized that NCCU has improved pretty well recently regarding "physical" abilities, bringing up the establishment of Men’s Division 1 Basketball Varsity sponsored by NCCU alumnus, which marked the new era of NCCU’ s sports development. “Regardless of how harsh the situation is, NCCU will continue to move on, becoming a top university” as the leadership of ideas, inspiration to society and the global reach.
The ceremony awarded seven elected distinguished alumni Li Jin-chuan (李金銓), Wu Fong-shan (吳豐山), Su Chi (蘇起), Shan De-sing (單德興), Li Hsiao-yuan (李小媛), Jiang Fong-nian (姜豐年) and Yu Ji-long (于紀隆) (in order of year of graduation), while Li Jin-chuan weren’t able to attend for official business.
Wu Fong-shan encouraged students “to discipline, oppress and torture as a competent person”; Su Ci quoted from Master Cheng Yen (證嚴法師) to inspire the students, “Buddha statue is not only a sculpture for you to worship but also represents those who have helped you on your path.”; Shan De-sing was proud of NCCU and thanked the school for having inspired him; Li Hsiao-yuan also showed her gratitude toward NCCU and recalled having been in a warm and big family of the Department of Psychology; Jiang Fong-nian expressed that he is surprised, honored and grateful for being awarded; while Yu Ji-long said he feels thankful to have met teachers, friends and even alumni of NCCU because it makes both his career and life different.
Besides distinguished alumni, awards appreciating professors and administrations for their endeavour were also given. Li Ming (李明), Dean of the College of International Affairs, has served in NCCU for 20 years. He thanked the school for having cultivated him and brought a couplet written by himself, which combined NCCU’s motto and the 90th anniversary slogan.
Liu Yong-fong (劉永鳳) works as the librarian at the Social Sciences Library and was awarded the best administrative staff. Liu stated that NCCU has started the construction plan for a new library since the school ground expansion in 2015, and she “hopes all alumni who are willing to and capable of can support the construction.” The plan is still at its fund raising stage.
Encouraging professors to keep delving into researches, Prof. Liao Ruei-ming (廖瑞銘) from the Department of Psychology, Distinguished Prof. Huang Jia-ci (黃家齊) from the Department of Business Administration, Associate Prof. Jhuang Hao-jyun (莊皓鈞) from the Department of Management Information System, and the Distinguished Prof. Syu Jia-huei (徐嘉慧) from the Department of English Literatures obtained the top award in excellent. Other 34 professors were also awarded subsequently.
Winners of the memorial academic research award of Chen Bai-nian (陳百年), first NCCU president after the reformation in Taiwan, were also awarded in the ceremony. They included PhD student Wang Wei-na (王瑋娜) from the Department of Communication, PhD student Huang Yue-yin (黃月銀) from the Department of Chinese literature, Chen Hui-ya (陳薈雅) from the Department of Philosophy, and Huang Dong-kai (黃東凱) from the Department of Chinese Literature.
Huang Ying-di (黃盈笛) from the Graduate school of Law, Jhao Yu-jie (趙羽婕) from the Department of Money and Banking, Tang Jyun-you (湯鈞佑), and Jian Ming-you (簡名佑) received the Dao Nan Medal of Outstanding Students.
2017 is also the 50th anniversary for the 27th alumni graduation. Led by Wang Li-sing (王力行), alumnus from the Department of Journalism, the publisher of CommonWealth and Global Views Monthly, gave the “傳承與創新” memoir jointly compiled by the alumni as a present to express gratitude toward NCCU.
